Senate Passes Measure to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Documents
The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will force the release of investigative files related to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a change of position by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. Trump's team changed course after months of trying to forestall the joint action involving a controversy that has followed the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Approval in Congress
The Senate acted by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, speeding up the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a massive majority.
The public have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”
Next Steps
This legislation next will be sent to Trump for his signature. Trump stated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.
Even though the president has for months dismissed the outcry over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “political stunt”, he voiced approval for the measure over the weekend, and said he would approve it if it reaches his desk.
Response
The Democratic party, along with those affected and their representatives who were present in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was enacted. Lone dissent came from a GOP representative, who said he was concerned the measure would disclose identifying details of witnesses, persons of interest and others involved in the investigation.
