Revitalized Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been earned on hard courts
A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his first championship for nearly 30 months with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the competition final.
Medvedev, a ex- number one, has endured a torrid year, managing just one match at the big events and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.
The player's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his service game in especial - caused him exiting of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with long-time trainer Cervara.
Presently working with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily progressed in the last few weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought competitive victory over opponent Corentin Moutet.
This represents his first championship after the Rome competition and first on a hard surface since that period of that year.
The win also indicates he has won twenty-one championships at 21 distinct events.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a competition with my two daughters together, so to win a trophy is particularly special," commented tennis professional the champion.
"This championship is in tribute of my child Victoria, because the first title I won when my older daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his previous six championship matches, including in Halle in the past months.
Medvedev's defensive approach and recurring reactions on court had led commentators to question if his ability to compete at the top level was over.
Yet the player has altered his approach in the past month, striving to advance forward and perform aggressively, reinforced by an improved serving game.
Medvedev came back from a break down in the opening set against the challenging opponent, securing 4 of the final five exchanges to go ahead.
Both players traded breaks in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his first professional championship, took control to force a final set.
Moutet saved four initial opportunities in a competitive third set before the champion won the break to fifteen to secure the win.
Suitably, the winner secured victory with a rally at the net, with his opponent incapable to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
