EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
